The arrows point to lime mud that filled the bottoms
of shells that did not
become completely filled. After burial, calcite crystallized in the remaining
open space above the mud floor. The orientation of these mud floors therefore
shows which way was "up" in the sediment. "Way up" features,
typically
partially filled shells, are called "geopetals."
