Slab of fusulinid limestone from yellow weathering subunit of Worland Limestone

Polished slab of micritic limestone rich in fusulinid forams and fragments
of algal plates from near the middle of the Worland Limestone (lower part
of the yellow-weathering zone). The mottling of lighter ovate patches
surrounded by darker matrix indicates thorough reworking of the sediment
by burrowers. This slice cut most of the fusulinids transversely--at a right
angle to the axis of coiling. Few were cut axially--parallel to the axis of
coiling and long dimension of the test ("shell"). This shows a preferential
orientation. See close-up for additional discussion.
