Rhizomorphs in yellow and gray portion of varicolored claystone

Close-up of yellowish orange root casts in the varicolored claystone
unit. These are more or less vertical and individually distinct in the
upper part, but are deflected toward horizontal deeper in the unit
where they seem to merge together. Apparently the nearly horizontal,
light gray layer of sticky clay that extends across the photo a few
centimeters below the bottom of the pencil presented a barrier to
penetration by most roots. Those roots that penetrated the layer
were produced by larger plants--the yellowish orange root mottles
below the layer are larger than those above it.
